All physics majors and astronomy/physics double majors are required to work with a faculty mentor on a senior project.
Summer internship and research programs both on and off campus offer abundant possibilities for learning outside the classroom.
The department boasts extremely dedicated faculty with excellent pedagogy, many of whom have been honored and recognized for their excellence. Physics & Astronomy faculty includes winners of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award and the SUNY Distinguished Teaching Award.

The astronomy program, which focuses on hands-on experience rather than advanced mathematical/theoretical techniques, offers the Jack Smolen Observatory and the John R. Kirk Planetarium for the education of students and the local community.
